Oh Captain, My Captain

I saw Captain EO at Epcot on my recent Disney trip. I hadn't seen it since it first opened there in 1986, and I'm not even kidding when I say it brought tears to my eyes. Like all little kids in the 80's I was obsessed with Star Wars and Michael Jackson, so this attraction hit me right where I lived.  Looking at it through grown-up eyes, the whole thing is incredibly overblown and ridiculous, but nostalgia's a hell of a drug.

Captain EO! He transforms Borgs into mulleted dancers through the power of music! If you don't love that that then I don't want to know you.

Neither Brave nor Bold. Discuss.

(I know these aren't really Disney, but if you squint real hard you can justify their inclusion here, what with the Marvel merger and the Warren Beatty movie.)

Art Appreciation

Sometimes with greats like Charles Schulz, Jack Kirby, or Carl Barks, you start to take them for granted and forget just how good they really were. Recently I reread the 1950 story "Big Top Bedlam" and was reminded just how awesome the Good Duck Artist really was.

These panels look like they could be stills from an animated cartoon. This segment would look just as fresh in any modern comic book, and that's just one of many awesome bits to this story. Check this out:

NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL COMICS!

If you've never read this story then quit reading this blog and click the link. Its weirdness quotient is through the roof, but more importantly it's a great piece of work from a master cartoonist at the top of his game.

Some mad genius has built a scale model of Uncle Scrooge's money bin, based on Don Rosa's blueprints. View his Flickr set here.
