Don Rosa Draws Mickey Mouse

According to the ever-reliable Internet, Don Rosa has stated many times that he finds Mickey Mouse to be a boring character, and he has no desire to ever write a Mickey story. Too bad...I think he draws a damn good Mouse.

Pertwillaby Papers

Here's why Don Rosa is awesome: he was drawing Uncle Scrooge stories before he ever drew an Uncle Scrooge story. This is an episode of The Pertwillaby Papers, a comic strip Rosa started as a college student and continued in the fanzine The Rocket's Blast Comicollector. Many of Rosa's Uncle Scrooge stories had their origins in the Pertwillaby Papers, including his first Duck story, "The Son of the Sun."

Fantagraphics collected several Pertwillaby Papers storyarcs into the comic books "Don Rosa's Comics and Stories" #1 and #2 in 1983. I was lucky enough to score a copy of #1 on the Ebay, but have yet to come across #2. Apparently there were plans for a #3, but it never actually went to press.

I love this strip. The art style reminds me of the yellowing cartoons that hung on the wall of my old college hangout, but the plots are like something from an Indiana Jones movie. (Yes, I said "old college hangout." Shut up.) If Fantagraphics or some other smart publisher were ever to put out a nice hardcover collection of this material, I'd be there in a heartbeat. Great stuff from a great cartoonist.

All in the family

This is the Donald Duck Family Tree by Don Rosa. For a long time I didn't know that cousin Fethry Duck was included, because his face is smooshed up against the binding in the copy in The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck trade paperback. Rosa based this family tree primarily on characters from Barks stories, although characters created by other writers like Al Taliaferro were included if they didn't contradict Barks' Duck Universe. Note that the nephews' father is obscured by a bird, probably because Donald's sister is a total slut.

A little something special

Here's some Don Rosa stuff from my collection.




I got this print last year at the Baltimore Comic-Con. Rosa had a whole bunch of comic book and superhero- themed prints for sale at the Gemstone booth, and this one was by far my favorite. Ordinarily I don't go for prints (a lot of the time you can get original sketches for just a little bit more), but this piece will look really nice hanging in my office/ comic reading room.







At this year's Baltimore Con, Boom! Studios sold this Convention-Exclusive variant from their new Uncle Scrooge series. Ten dollars is a little steep for a freakin comic book, but this is a really nice cover. Rosa had his own booth at the con, so I was able to get it signed as well.

Rosa was really cool both times I talked to him at conventions. Sometimes you love a creator's work to death and then you meet them and they seem like jerks (Not naming names*), but Don seems to be a decent guy. Hopefully Boom! keeps his stuff in print (in nice weighty hardcovers, hint hint) as well as putting out the new-to-us Italian stuff.

Fortune favors the bold

Don Rosa is the greatest. Rosa is a cartoonist and avid Carl Barks fan who got to live the dream and create Duck stories of his own. Rosa's comics are hilarious and imaginative, and many fans (like me) consider him to be Barks' true successor.

Rosa's Uncle Scrooge stories are more continuity-obsessive than any superhero book; in Rosa's Duckburg all the Carl Barks stories took place in the 1950's and early 60's, and his own stories often use the Barks tales as their starting point. Rosa has written sequels to the classic Barks stories and spun throwaway lines of dialogue into full comics. Eventually Rosa tied all the little hints and clues that emerged about Uncle Scrooge's over the years into the amazing "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" series, the definitive biography of the character.

Sadly, all great legends must end, and above we see Rosa's vision of that ending. I'm not sure where the above image came from originally, but I found it at this Italian website.
