Mike Allred is one of my art heroes. Back in the 90's his groovy retro-styled
Madman was a breath of fresh air next to all the Deathblood and X-Posse garbage cluttering up the racks. Since then, Allred has continued to grow as an artist and writer, on his own creations and on work-for-hire stuff for DC and Marvel.
In issue #3 of
Madman Atomic Comics from 2007, Allred paid homage to his favorite artists (and man, does he have a lot of favorites) by illustrating an issue-long conversation between two characters in the style of comic greats past and present. Among those honored were Popeye creator E.C. Segar, and Mickey Mouse Maestro Floyd Gottfredson:
